Module 01
Overview & Algorithms
The ACLS algorithm framework — the decision-making structure that guides every resuscitation.
The ACLS Algorithm Framework
- ACLS is built on a series of linked algorithms, each addressing a specific clinical situation.
- The BLS Primary Survey (CAB) is the foundation: Chest compressions, Airway, Breathing.
- The ACLS Secondary Survey adds advanced interventions: IV/IO access, medications, advanced airway, and reversible cause identification.
- Every algorithm begins with determining: Does the patient have a pulse? Is the rhythm shockable?
- The two central arrest algorithms are the VF/Pulseless VT Algorithm and the Asystole/PEA Algorithm.
- Peri-arrest algorithms cover tachycardia, bradycardia, and post-cardiac arrest care.
Universal ACLS Approach
- 1. Monitor and identify the rhythm.
- 2. Determine if the patient is stable or unstable.
- 3. Determine if the rhythm is shockable or non-shockable.
- 4. Initiate the matching algorithm.
- 5. Identify and treat reversible causes (Hs and Ts) throughout.
Clinical Pearl
The algorithm is a guide, not a script — always tailor interventions to the individual patient and situation.
