Module 09

Acute Coronary Syndrome

Recognize ACS, obtain the 12-lead ECG, and pursue rapid reperfusion therapy.

Recognize ACS

  • Chest pain
  • Radiation (jaw, arm, back)
  • Diaphoresis
  • Nausea
  • Hypotension

Immediate Priorities

1
Obtain 12-lead ECG
As quickly as possible — ideally within 10 minutes of arrival.
2
Chew aspirin
162–325 mg chewed for rapid antiplatelet effect.
3
Rapid PCI
Primary reperfusion strategy for STEMI.

Door-to-Balloon Goal

≤ 90 minutes

The time from hospital arrival to balloon inflation during PCI — a critical quality metric in STEMI care.

Clinical Pearl

Time is muscle — every minute of delay in reperfusion means more myocardium lost. The 12-lead ECG is the single most important diagnostic tool.
